Multiple passengers and crew have been injured after a Delta Airlines jet from Los Angeles to Sydney was hit by significant turbulence on Friday morning.

Flight DL41 "experienced a brief period of turbulence" as it landed at the Sydney airport, an airline spokesperson told. Four flight attendants were injured.

Emergency medical services stated they assessed five patients, and took three to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries that included pain in the back and headaches. Those affected ranged from their thirties and seventies.

The event represents the newest example of aircraft encountering turbulence, with experts saying that climate change is a major factor.

There were 245 people and a crew of 15 on the Airbus A350, the Delta spokesperson noted, clarifying that the plane landed "without further incident" at Sydney Airport at shortly before 7 a.m. on Friday morning.

Emergency responders reported they received a call just only 180 seconds before the plane touched down, and ambulances were ready and waiting at the airport.
