England's Assistant Coach Shares The Approach: The England Jersey Should Feel Like a Cape, Not Body Armour.

A decade ago, Barry competed at a lower division club. Now, his attention is fixed to assist the England manager win the World Cup in the upcoming tournament. His journey from the pitch to the sidelines began through volunteering for Accrington's Under-16s. Barry reflects, “Evening sessions, a partial pitch, organizing 11-a-side … deflated balls, scarce bibs,” and he fell in love with it. He had found his purpose.

Rapid Rise

The coach's journey has been remarkable. Beginning with his first major job, he developed a reputation for innovative drills and great man-management. His club career included elite sides, while also serving in roles with national teams for Ireland, Belgium, and Portugal. He has worked with stars like top footballers. Today, as part of Team England, it's all-consuming, the peak according to him.

“All begins with a vision … However, I hold that obsession can move mountains. You dream big then you break it down: ‘How do we do it, gradually?’ We dream about winning the World Cup. Yet dreams alone aren't enough. We must create a methodical process enabling us to have the best chance.”

Obsession with Details

Obsession, particularly on fine points, defines Barry’s story. Putting in long hours under the sun—sometimes the moon, too, he and Tuchel challenge limits. The approach involve psychological profiling, a strategy for high temperatures for the World Cup in the US, Canada, and Mexico, and building a true team. The coach highlights the England collective and rejects terms like “international break”.

“This isn't a vacation or a pause,” Barry says. “It was vital to establish a setup that attracts the squad and, secondly, they feel so stretched that it’s a breather.”

Ambitious Trainers

The assistant coach says and Tuchel as extremely driven. “We aim to control every aspect of the game,” he states. “We seek to command every metre of the pitch and we dedicate many of our days on. We must not just to keep up of the trends and to lead and set new standards. It's an ongoing effort with a mindset of solving issues. And to simplify complexity.

“There are 50 days with the players before the World Cup finals. We need to execute a sophisticated style that gives us a tactical advantage and explain it thoroughly in that period. It’s to take it from idea to information to understanding to action.

“To build a methodology enabling productivity during the limited time, we must utilize the whole 500 we’ll have had after our appointment. In the time we don’t have the players, it's vital to develop bonds among them. It's essential to invest time on the phone with them, observing them live, feel them, touch them. Relying only on those 50 days, we won't succeed.”

Final Qualifiers

The coach is focusing ahead of the concluding matches for the World Cup preliminaries – against Serbia at Wembley and away to Albania. They've already ensured a spot in the tournament by winning all six games without conceding a goal. Yet, no let-up is planned; on the contrary. Now is the moment to strengthen the squad's character, for further momentum.

“Thomas and I are both pretty clear that the style of play must reflect everything that is good of English football,” Barry explains. “The physicality, the versatility, the strength, the integrity. The Three Lions kit should be harder than ever to get but light to wear. It ought to be like a superhero's cape and not body armour.

“For it to feel easy, we have to give them a style that allows them to operate similar to weekly matches, that connects with them and lets them release restrictions. They need to reduce hesitation and more in doing.

“There are morale boosts available to trainers in attack and defense – playing out from the back, closing down early. But in the middle area of the pitch, those 24 metres, it seems football is static, notably in domestic leagues. All teams are well-prepared these days. They understand tactics – mid-blocks, deep blocks. We are focusing to increase tempo in that central area.”

Thirst for Improvement

The coach's thirst for improvement is relentless. When he studied for the Uefa pro licence, he felt anxious regarding the final talk, as his cohort contained luminaries like Lampard and Carrick. So, to build his skill set, he went into the most challenging environments imaginable to hone his presentations. Including a prison in Liverpool, where he also took inmates during an exercise.

He earned his license in 2020 at the top of the class, and his research paper – The Undervalued Set Piece, where he studied thousands of throw-ins – became a published work. Lampard included convinced and he hired Barry to his team with the Blues. After Lampard's dismissal, it spoke volumes that the club got rid of virtually all of his coaches while keeping Barry.

His replacement with the club took over, within months, they secured European glory. After Tuchel's exit, Barry remained under Graham Potter. Once Tuchel resurfaced at Munich, he recruited Barry from Chelsea to work together again. The Football Association consider them a duo similar to Southgate and Holland.
