Eurovision Was Once a Lighthearted Spectacle – However It Has Become a Cynical Way to Whitewash War.
A freshly coined term surfaced a couple of months into the intensive bombing of Gaza by Israel. Labeled WCNSF, it signifies “Child casualty without any family left”. This term is found only in Gaza, as stated by doctors like paediatricians. Typically, it is uncommon for medical staff to attend to a young patient who has been bereaved of their entire family. However, there has been absolutely nothing ordinary about the genocide in Gaza, where entire family lineages have been eradicated and the number of child amputees exceeds that of any other place in the world. Nothing normal in numerous doctors coming back from a landscape of rubble with testimonies of children being intentionally shot at.
A Living Nightmare Regardless of a Reported Truce
Conditions in Gaza persist as an utter catastrophe. Critical healthcare resources are failing to reach those in need, and major human rights organizations have stated that genocidal acts are continuing. Officials rejects these accusations, just as it refutes each claim it is charged with. Yet as traumatised orphans are now suffering from the cold in makeshift tent camps, there is a little heartwarming news: apparently nothing is going to stop the Eurovision from advancing its stated mission of “togetherness and artistic sharing.” Organizers will continue to roll out a welcoming platform for Israel, despite the fact that several European countries have now withdrawn in objection. And this, we are told, is what global togetherness manifests as.
The contest, notably banned Russia from taking part in 2022 because of the “grave situation in Ukraine”. But the crisis in Gaza is treated differently.
A Selective Vision
Overlook the circumstance that Israel was criticized for unfair vote practices last year in what appears to have been an bid to manipulate Eurovision. Forget the fact that a toddler was reportedly killed in Gaza just days ago. Pay no mind to the evidence that settler violence and coerced removal in the West Bank have increased dramatically. Overlook the situation that international journalists are still prevented from independent reporting in Gaza. None of this, apparently, should be seen as a barrier of Eurovision’s self-proclaimed spirit of unity.
The Pageant Proceeds Amidst Staggering Tragedy
Eurovision marks seven decades next year – almost double the average life expectancy of a person in Gaza at present. The event will proceed, but it will find it impossible to reclaim the camp joy it was formerly known for. An institution that was originally built on togetherness has devolved into a transparent instrument to sanitize military aggression.
