Israeli citizens commemorate second anniversary of 7 October attacks as Gaza ceasefire negotiations continue
People have gathered around the country to mark 24 months since the Hamas-conducted assault on 7 October 2023, as discussions proceeded in the neighboring country over a conclusion to the hostilities in the Gaza Strip.
The attack resulted in more than 1,200 people killed and 251 others captured away to Gaza as captives. It was the uniquely deadliest day for the Jewish community since the World War II.
Israel answered by initiating a defensive operation in Gaza which has killed in excess of 67,000 people, based on figures from the territory's Hamas-run health ministry. Its figures are regarded as reliable by the United Nations and other international bodies.
"Our aggressive adversaries have struck forcefully, but they have not broken us," the prime minister added on Tuesday.
He also vowed to "achieve all the goals of the war: the release of all the kidnapped, the destruction of the Hamas administration and the guarantee that Gaza will not present a risk to Israel".
Commemorative Gatherings Across Israel
The government authorities postponed state remembrance events until mid-October - after the conclusion of the Jewish High Holiday season - but ceremonies still occurred throughout the country on Tuesday.
A commemorative event for the loved ones of Israelis who lost their lives in the Hamas assault was organized in the coastal city. Put together by the families themselves, it was televised throughout Israeli broadcast stations.
Hours earlier, a minute's silence was observed across the country.
Peace Meetings in Egypt
Simultaneously, the conflicting parties' negotiating teams gathered in the North African tourist destination of the Egyptian city for a second day of mediated discussions to review the provisions of the agreement.
A senior Palestinian official knowledgeable about the talks indicated that an late session of indirect talks began at 19:00 Cairo time.
The official explained the day's discussions concluded without tangible results, amid differences over the proposed Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas seeks to make certain Israel does not recommence fighting after the initial stage of the agreement.
He noted that the talks are "difficult and have still not deliver any real breakthrough," but mentioned that facilitators are striving to reduce the differences between the both parties.
Key Issues in Talks
- An enduring truce
- The swap of the prisoners still kept by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
- The pullout of military personnel from Gaza
- Measures for relief supplies distribution
- Future administration of the area
Citizen Feeling
In Tel Aviv's memorial area earlier, 29-year-old Hagar - whose family member lived through the assault on the gathering, where 378 people were killed and dozens more were taken hostage by Hamas militants - explained: "No place seems like home now and until each abducted person come back not a single person will be secure."
"Once we see everyone home again, we can relax again. Then we can begin to heal," she concluded.
In front of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's residence in Jerusalem, people gathered to express their support for the families of the abducted. Israel reports 48 continue in confinement in Gaza, 20 of whom are thought to be living.
Activist one woman stated: "We must do whatever arrangement necessary for the abducted to come back home. But we sincerely need guarantees that we will be secure."
Surveys now consistently show that about the majority of the population prefer the conflict to finish in exchange for the freedom of the captives.
Palestinian Conditions
At the area of the gathering, mourners gathered to honor the dead.
From that location, the sound of aerial bombardments and artillery could be noticed just a short distance away in Gaza, where local people indicated the severe Israeli shelling continued.
In the urban center, bombardments were reported in the morning of that day in the west side Tal al-Hawa, sector and zone districts and in the east side district of that sector, as well the camp to the northwest.
"As the evening comes, the dread arrives with it," evacuated urban resident a mother, whose 17-year-old son was died by an Israeli aerial attack last year, described.
"Me and my three children are fearful of the bombings. Throughout the evening we are lying together, holding each other, notably my youngest child who places his face on me throughout the night."
"Every second we monitor the reports to see the situation. And I'm afraid that this truce will not be finalized and that the war will resume to us."
Medical Situation
Al-Shifa hospital in the urban area announced it had taken in the remains of half dozen people by the midday, including several who died in an Israeli strike in the south part district.
Nasser hospital in the southern city of Khan Younis reported additional fatalities had been delivered. An individual was lost his life by Israeli forces while seeking help to the southern area, medical staff reported.
