Jets Head Coach Aaron Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After NYC Incident

Jets head coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he has been in contact with cornerback Kris Boyd and feels certain the player will recover well after suffering a gunshot wound in midtown Manhattan in the early hours of Sunday.

Glenn shared that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “upbeat” during a recent discussion.

“That’s what eases my mind, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His wife and his kid, they’re in good spirits and he is expected to recover fully.”

It remained unclear when Boyd could be discharged the hospital, where his condition is described as in critical but steady condition.

“Don’t know just yet,” the coach said. “However, I can share, hearing him speak, his attitude was encouraging. Once more, that’s what gives me comfort, given his positive frame of mind and he expresses himself so positively.”

Authorities released surveillance images earlier this week of a suspect in the attack on the player. A motive for the shooting is currently under review and officials stated it is unknown if Boyd was singled out. No other injuries according to reports.

The attack took place just after 2am on Sunday morning in the area between Madison Square Garden and the iconic square. Boyd, twenty-nine, was admitted to Bellevue Hospital after being shot in the abdomen, according to authorities. The perpetrator got away.

Glenn said Boyd has occupied his thinking “a great deal” since learning of the incident. The coach said that Boyd and his spouse just had a baby.

“What immediately crossed my mind, he has a new baby,” Glenn noted. “My mind went to his family, worrying about his newborn and my priority is his well-being. And that’s the only thing that really went through my mind.
“A certain process is underway, that I won’t detail, but I am pleased that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”

Boyd hasn’t played in the present campaign, after joining the team, after being placed on injured reserve on August 18 with a shoulder injury that needed an operation.

Boyd came to New York as a new signing in spring and was expected to be a key part of an improved special teams group under Glenn and special teams coordinator Chris Banjo. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury during a practice session on early August and had to be helped off.

Boyd continued to be present all season long while recovering from the shoulder injury.

“He has stayed engaged with the team,” Glenn commented. “In fact, he comes to the games all the time. He’s fully engaged. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”

Boyd, from Texas, began his career with the Vikings after being a seventh-round pick by the Vikings out of the University of Texas in the 2019 draft. He signed with the Arizona Cardinals in last year and moved to Houston’s squad after that. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal valued at $1.6 million with the Jets in March.
