Manchester United Poised to Secure German Forward Lea Schüller from the Bavarian Giants
Manchester United are finalising completing the signing for prolific German forward Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer away from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Marquee Acquisition for United
Schüller, who has six months remaining on her deal, has been a consistent goal-getter for both club and country. She has scored more than 100 goals for the German giants and found the net 54 times in 82 caps for Germany. This signing will be seen as a major signing for the Women’s Super League team.
Departure from Bayern was expected after she was seen fighting back tears while applauding the club's fans after a win over Bayer Leverkusen recently.
It was reported in December that the German women's top flight was losing one of its top forwards. Per multiple sources, all the paperwork for the move have now been completed.
Reliable Goalscoring to Strengthen United's Forward Line
The 28-year-old’s signing is expected to provide a major uplift to United’s attacking options. Schüller has been remarkably consistent in front of goal in Germany’s top flight.
- For seven straight seasons, including the most recent campaign, she reached at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
- She won the top scorer award in 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Gathering Steam at Carrington
Securing Schüller’s signature coincides with a period when United seem to be gathering positive momentum.
Recent performances include qualifying for the Champions League knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a victory in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.
In the transfer market, the winter break has seen additional activity:
- The acquisition of Swedish defender Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japanese midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, a fan favourite since joining in 2023.
Regarding the midfielder's extension, a senior figure stated: “Miyazawa is now a vital component to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and technical ability allows her and the team to control and dictate play from the middle of the park.”
Lundkvist, who has arrived from a club in the American league, added: “You can sense how much they [United] have grown in the last few years, playing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and now featuring in the Champions League.”
