The gravest possible consequences of the climate crisis for the UK have been outlined by scientists, ranging from a scorching 4C jump in mean temperatures to a 6.5-foot rise in sea levels. A separate possibility predicts a plunge of 6C in temperature following the failure of crucial Atlantic Ocean currents, which would severely impact farming and energy demand.
Credible Outcomes, Not Guarantees
These effects, some of which are connected to climate tipping points, are seen as low probability but possible. The scientists explained that these projections plugged a hole in risk assessment that had rendered the UK not ready for extreme outcomes.
"The climate extremes we have detailed should not be seen as certainties, but they are possible," commented the professor who led the research. "The nation has been formulating policy lacking the tools to assess catastrophic outcomes. - AMOC Shutdown: A major ocean current, the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (Amoc), is losing strength and losing stability due to ocean warming. The project was requested as part of a official risk assessment framework. Earlier reports have cautioned that not enough attention was being allocated to high-consequence, low-probability risks.
Official experts has recommended that the UK needs to "prepare for two degrees of warming" and evaluate the threats for 4C. Past policy documents have been described as being "inadequate" by environmental groups.
