The man played a "sweet game" with the children, Mrs Prior said, in which he would enter the children's bedrooms when they were preparing to sleep and request they to ingest treats "as quickly as they can".

She told the court Ruben had played this game with the young males "over an extended period", and children had previously fallen ill the following morning.

She stated Ruben had been successful in rationalizing this over a long period as the youngsters being "overwrought by enjoyment", until his stepchild had worries in July 2025.

The prosecutor added: "This year his stepchild had suspicions about what was going on, with valid cause.

"They decided to have a look in the defendant's belongings."

The legal counsel said objects including lubricant, ointment and medical needles were located, and his stepson contacted the police about his concerns.

She said Ruben went on to engage in the "treat game" with six children that evening - July 26th - and they were all ill the next day.

"Authorities" had not responded by that stage," she added.

The regulatory agency, the police conduct office, had stated that it was investigating law enforcement's management of the events.
