Prison Shock: Brazil's Ex-President Jair Bolsonaro Confronts Time in Prison
He fought the legal system and justice triumphed.
A couple of months following receiving a 27-year sentence for seeking to “eradicate” Brazil’s democracy, one-time leader Jair Bolsonaro at last looks jail-bound.
Anticipated Imprisonment
The convicted plotter – who had been living under residential detention in his residence while a series of judicial steps and challenges unfold – is widely expected to be imprisoned in the coming days, amidst growing speculation that he will be transferred to a infamous maximum security facility.
Past Statements on Inmates
Over Bolsonaro’s long political career, the far-right former soldier exhibited scant mercy for Brazil’s jailed individuals.
“Why should we offer these dirtbags a easy time?” he once mused. “They deserve to be messed, full-fucking-stop. That's my view.”
On another occasion, Bolsonaro declared: “If you don’t want to end up behind bars, the only thing required is to avoid rape, abduction or rob.”
Incarceration Destination Speculation
But the possibility of Bolsonaro himself landing in the Papuda maximum security prison in Brasília has appalled allies, several of whom this week visited the facility in an seeming effort to discourage the high court from transferring him there.
Senator Lucas, a politician from Bolsonaro’s political party who was among that group, said he predicted the elderly figure to be jailed in the next 10 days and worried his assigned prison could be Papuda.
He asserted Bolsonaro’s serious digestive ailments – the consequence of a life-threatening stabbing during the 2018 political campaign – implied it would be dangerous to keep the ex-leader there. “His [health] situation is very grave. He cannot to cope if they take him to Papuda … It will be dreadful,” he commented, who also voiced anxiety about packed cells and the quality of jail cuisine.
During his tour Papuda, Lucas remembered observing cells accommodating 40 detainees: “It's practically one square meter per prisoner.
“We conversed to the inmates and they protest, unsurprisingly, of the horrible cuisine,” added the senator.
Backers Speak Out
The senator isn't the sole person voicing opinions before the former president’s anticipated detention.
Penning in a major publication, a different supporter, the ex- cabinet member Fábio Wajngarten, deplored the “harsh” end to Bolsonaro’s “impeccable” public service and claimed Brazil was about to witness “the largest unfairness in its past”.
“It is an wrong that eats away the spirits of millions people in Brazil,” Wajngarten wrote.
Mixed General Reaction
This could be accurate due to the substantial following Bolsonaro retains on the conservative side. Yet his predicted incarceration has also pleased the spirits of millions individuals who feel he deserves to be imprisoned for conspiring to prevent the incoming president from assuming office – and also plotting to have him assassinated.
The lawmaker, a representative for the current leader's political party, stated: “Not a soul desires Bolsonaro to be put in a hole. Nobody desires Bolsonaro to be sent in segregation. Nobody wishes Bolsonaro to lack food or for him to have to sleep on the floor. We desire him to receive dignified handling – but proper treatment in prison. He cannot continue being his own prison warden for his entire life.”
He observed how Bolsonaro supporters, who have spent years celebrating the harsh handling of prisoners, had abruptly woken up to their privileges. “Recently has the far-right – which has repeatedly asserted that civil liberties are not for lawbreakers – opted to tour a prison to discover what conditions are truly like,” he stated.
“The former president is a criminal,” Otoni insisted, but that did not mean he deserved “humiliating, demeaning handling”.
Likely Jail Conditions
In spite of rumors that Bolsonaro could be moved to Papuda, which now contains about thousands of detainees, his more likely location seems to be a adjacent prison for officers and other “unique” inmates referred to as Papudinha (Little Papuda).
His potential cell are far more pleasant than those in the primary facility, although still a distant from the comfort Bolsonaro enjoyed while occupying the stunning presidential palace, around 12 miles away.
According to reports, the accommodation Bolsonaro could expect to inhabit in Papudinha measures about 24 sq metres – about the dimensions of a couple of car spots – and contains a 12 sq metre bathroom with a shower and a 12 sq metre terrace. “The ex-president might be allowed to have a television and even a minibar in his quarters as long as they were supplied by his family,” the report suggested.
Ideological Responses
Senator Lucas condemned the speculated proposal to send the one-time head of state to Papuda as “a form of payback” on the part of the supreme court judge who presided over Bolsonaro’s legal case and will decide his future in the {
