The Legendary Williams, 45, Awarded Special Entry for Her Initial Australian Open in Half a Decade.

A seven-time Grand Slam singles champion Venus Williams has been granted a wild-card entry for the first Grand Slam of the year, which kicks off on the 18th of January in the city of Melbourne.

A Landmark Return to Melbourne Park

The event organizers confirmed on the weekend that the forty-five-year-old legend will make a return at the tournament venue a staggering 28 years after her debut. Back in 1998, she overcame her sibling Serena in the early stage before bowing out in the last eight to fellow American Lindsay Davenport.

Gearing Up for the Australian Summer

The tennis star had earlier stated in the month of November her plans to compete in Auckland, New Zealand, where she also received a wild card, a fortnight before the Melbourne event. Organizers noted that Williams is scheduled to participate in Hobart, Australia a following week, just before the start of play at Melbourne Park.

Her most recent visit in the city was in the year 2021, and she has finished runner-up in the women’s singles on two separate instances, falling short against Serena in the finals of 2003 and 2017.

"I’m excited to return in Australia and eagerly anticipating playing during the summer season," Williams stated. "I’ve had so many incredible moments there, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to return to a venue that has meant so much to my professional journey."

Statistical Highlights

Williams' overall record at Melbourne Park stands at an impressive 54 victories and 21 defeats. The upcoming edition will mark the twenty-second occasion she has appeared in the main draw.

Establishing a New Record

Officials indicated that Williams is poised to be the oldest woman to compete in an Open's main draw, eclipsing the record previously held by Japanese Kimiko Date, who was 44 when she was defeated in the first round at Melbourne Park in 2015.

Recent Life Event

In late December, Williams married Danish-born actor and model Andrea Preti in Florida's Palm Beach.
